How to use the meta description generator
- Describe what the page is about in one plain sentence.
- Optionally add a keyword, your brand, real benefits (one per line) and a call to action.
- Pick the page type to get matching templates.
- Choose a candidate, edit it while watching the length meter and previews, then copy the text or meta tag.
Worked example
Local roofing page
Summary "we repair leaking roofs, damaged shingles and flashing across Denver", keyword "roof repair" and CTA "book a free inspection" produce 8 candidates. "Looking for roof repair? We repair leaking roofs, damaged shingles and flashing across Denver. Book a free inspection." is 118 characters and about 738 px (estimate), within the roughly 920 px desktop guideline.
How it works
Candidates are assembled from sentence templates using only your inputs, then de-duplicated. Width is estimated from Arial advance widths at 14 px. The meter compares it with about 920 px for desktop and 680 px for mobile, commonly observed snippet widths.
Assumptions
- Width limits are approximate guidelines, not published rules.
- Benefits you enter are assumed to be true for the page.
Frequently asked questions
Do meta descriptions affect rankings?
Google says meta descriptions are not a ranking factor. They can influence whether people click, because they are often used as the snippet under your title.
Why does Google show different text from my description?
Google often builds the snippet from page text that better matches the search. A specific, accurate description is more likely to be used for the main queries.
How long should a meta description be?
Snippets are cut by pixel width. Around 920 px on desktop (often 150 to 160 characters) usually shows in full; mobile shows less. Put the key message early.
Limitations
- English templates only.
- Cannot guarantee which text a search engine will display.
