Worked example
Short roof repair article (sample text)
The sample has 100 words and 72 unique words. The phrase "roof repair" appears 3 times, first at word 1, for a density of 6.00% (3 occurrences x 2 words / 100 words). The approximate Flesch reading ease is 75 (Fairly easy).
How it works
Text is split into lower-case word tokens (letters and digits, keeping inner apostrophes and hyphens). Phrase density is occurrences x words in the phrase / total words x 100. With stopword filtering, single stopwords and phrases that start or end with a stopword are excluded. Readability uses Flesch reading ease: 206.835 − 1.015 × (words ÷ sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables ÷ words) with a heuristic English syllable counter.
Assumptions
- Syllable counts are approximate, so the readability score is a rough guide.
- The stopword list is English.
Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal keyword density?
There is none. Search engines do not reward a target percentage. Use the keyword where it fits naturally, cover the topic well and use related terms.
Can too many keywords hurt?
Yes. Repeating keywords unnaturally is keyword stuffing, which is against Google spam policies and makes text harder to read.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser.
Limitations
- Word splitting is designed for languages that use spaces between words.
- Readability formulas measure sentence and word length, not clarity or accuracy.
